Sunday, May 23, 2010 - A main of lamb - two pink cutlets and a roll of braised breast with a trompette jus and wild garlic puree - was big boys' food. Which, for various reasons not unrelated to my boyness and bigness, suited me perfectly. We finished with infantilising desserts: a banana cheesecake with salted peanut butter ice cream, and a riff on rhubarb, including a pot of crumble dressed with an impeccable custard...Even now Sheffield, which has wells of money and taste, is not overendowed with good places in which to eat. That makes the Milestone even more welcome.

Very disappointed at the service and food. We had a long wait for drinks and didn't even bother with dessert. The food was terrible with burnt chips, dry overcooked venison, overcooked gammon, tough focaccia and inedible bread with our lamb burger. The standard of the food did not justify the price.

I was really looking forward to eating at the Milestone last evening but I have to say I was really disappointed with the quality of the food I was served. I opted for the pickled herring as a starter as I figured this would be light and leave room for my main course. I needn't have worried; the miniscule fillet was not even redeemed by its flavour and was in no way enhanced by the boring greenery and the bland creme fraiche. There is no way that at £5.50 this was anywhere near value for money even at gastro pub prices. So, by the time my main course, an open steak sandwich, arrived, I was very hungry indeed, so imagine my disappointment when the "rustic chips" I was promised appeared and tasted very burnt indeed. I did complain immediately and I was told to get on with my steak and they would cook me some more. The rest of the dish was not impressive, the bread was hard and there was more boring green stuff.

On a more positive note; the atmosphere was good, the drinks varied and not too pricey; the staff were very pleasant and obliging. I was part of a large party and assumed that this maybe contributed to the poor quality but I have just had a conversation with my daughter who ate at the Milestone recently with a friend. Her experience was very disappointing also.

Nice little upmarket bar and restaurant in the real ale quarter of Sheffield, close to the Tram. We had a lovely meal. Extremely high quality especially for an early bird. My partner , ever the bold one started with pidgeon, which was suprisingly meaty. This Restaurant is superb at making an exciting and delicous meal from cuts of meat and vegatables that are unfasionable or underused (they even give lessons). Puds were glorious and included a nice selection of port and dessert wine
